DEPARTMENT: Track and Yard Layout | Transformer Location
The decision on where to position your transformer is a balance between cost, safety and convenience. There are three options on most farms. Outside the main yard puts the transformer well out of the path of tankers, tractors and other machines moving around the farm. This option leaves maximum flexibility for development of your dairy shed and yard in future, but it’s not the cheapest. Another common option is to place the transformer in the middle of the tanker turning circle. This is relatively unused ground and it puts the transformer closer to the shed, saving you money. But it does limit the freedom for tractors and other vehicles to use the yard. The final lowest cost option is beside the electricity room and switchboard. The downside to this option is the limitations it puts on developing your shed in future. Your builder will help you balance these factors to reach the right decision.
